The concept of the Trust was formed during a meeting in October 2003 between four Rotarians, one from each of the four Rotary Clubs in Luton, who were each to become President of their respective clubs during the Centennial year of Rotary International in 2004-5. They had met to seek a joint project to celebrate the Centenary Year and which would have an ongoing and lasting benefit to the community of Luton. The four Rotarians were:
Many ideas were discussed, and the four Rotarians found common favour with the idea of the formation of the 'Rotary Youth Trust for Luton' as a lasting reminder to 'Rotary in Luton', its objects being to identify and give assistance to local young people with the potential to be tomorrows leaders, sporting, artistic, and academic achievers. The idea was taken back by each Rotarian to their respective Clubs for discussion and in due course the concept was enthusiastically endorsed by all of the Clubs. The 'Rotary Youth Trust for Luton' was set up by deed in February 2004 with the objects of: "The provision of the financial assistance and other such charitable support as the trustees shall from time to time think fit for the benefit of young people between the ages of 14 and 22 living, working or attending an educational establishment in the Borough of Luton" The initial trust funds were raised from various events organised by the four founding Rotary Clubs both as individual clubs and as joint events. The Trustees would especially like to acknowledge the significant donation given by the Steel Charitable Trust. The Rotary
Youth Trust for Luton continues to rely upon public donation and the
support of the four local Rotary Clubs for the provision of funds and
its future growth. Rotary
International is a worldwide organization of community minded men and
women from all walks of life within the business and the professions
and came to Luton in 1927. . The Trust
was launched at 'The Big Breakfast' held at the Riverside Suite on 5th
February 2005 and was not only supported by the four Rotary Clubs, but
also Luton Borough Council and the (then) University of Luton along
with many local and national businesses. The first 'awards' were made at Luton Town Hall on 'RI Centenary Day' the 25th February 2005. |
